Holiday Project for Children in Cameroon

Father Christmas distrubuting gifts to Cameroon children

Benbella Ndive, Treatment Advocate for Emergency Shelter Care in Columbus, OH, recently introduced Marvena Twigg, President/CEO, to Chief and Mrs. Ekollo from Cameroon, Africa. Chief Ekollo is chief of the village Bekoko on the outskirts of Douala, the biggest economic capital city of Cameroon. Three years ago Chief Ekollo was also elected mayor of this same district which covers 42 other villages of varying sizes.

Cameroon is called “Africa in miniature” for its geological and cultural diversity. The country is well known for its native styles of music, particularly makossa and bikutsi and for its successful national football team. English and French are the official languages of Cameroon. Poverty is rampant and they live and get by with very little.

There are several small villages around each large city. Each Christmas they have a party and “Father Time” distributes gifts to each child. There are several sponsors who purchase these gifts and one of them recently died, so NYAP has pledged to take that person’s place and send at least 600 small gifts (our goal is actually 1000 gifts!). We are asking staff and/or anyone willing to participate to buy $1 gifts from a local Dollar Store and send them to our Watermark headquarters so we can ship them so they arrive in Cameroon in time for the holidays. These gifts need to arrive at Watermark by October 14 so we can ship them in time to reach Cameroon for the holidays. The gifts are for children ranging from birth to 10 years of age. All of the gifts will need to be gift wrapped so if you, or whoever donates them, could wrap them that would be nice but if they arrive unwrapped we’ll wrap them from our offices. We’re planning to make this an activity that our Emergency Shelter Care youth can assist with as we wrap, sort and box them for shipment.

If you have any questions, please call Teresa Hodges or Nola LaWarre at the Watermark offices.
